Tucked between two large cargo containers was a small, label-less box. Phainon reached for it instinctively.
Smooth, dark velvet container, small enough to fit in one palm, at first glance it reminded him of those boxes that used to hold engagement rings in movies and commercials. Curiosity won over him as he untied the crimson ribbon around it and opened the box.
Inside was a silver ring.
Simple. Elegant. And completely out of place.During one of his deliveries, Phainon finds a little box that reminds him of someone special.

“Finish the story,” Phainon prompts, and it comes out kind of quiet, kind of weird.
“He fell in love with a warrior in Okhema,” Mydei tells him, sliding a hand under his pillow. “They were equals in just about everything, and that’s… significant to a Kremnoan. He died sacrificing himself to buy that warrior time to save the city.”
“That sounds like something a hero would do to me.”
“Maybe,” Mydei grumbles. “A real hero wouldn’t leave the one he loves to fight alone.”
