Judd and Bode were the only survivors of the explosion but they figured it out and Bode is now happily married with kids but then some out of control wildfires bring firefighters from everywhere, Including Bodes hometown EdgeWater. Kie absorbed the words like a part of her had known they were coming all along. She looked away from JJ, out at the lit up manor behind him - the grand facade, empty inside.
JJ dragged a hand through his hair, looking at her intently. “You get - you get why this can’t happen, right?”
Kie could feel the whole night closing in on her, like the perfect encapsulation of the last year of her life - the snide remarks from the girls at the Kook Academy, the laughter from the boys. JJ, standing in front of her, slipping away. She couldn’t keep doing this. Couldn’t keep getting this close only to lose him again, over and over.
