Summary
It happens too fast.
A moment ago everything was well, and the expedition — brave, good people, believing in their duty and their oath — was moving through the half-frozen caves, lighting the way with their chroma lamps. Monoco and Noco followed, arguing about who is the best Searcher between them two, and Verso — being in surprisingly good mood, Verso was walking beside them, teasing them both and purposefully adding fuel to the fire. Noco, the wise old man that he was, only laughed at his little jabs; Monoco, to their utter delight, was getting more and more agitated.
Everything was well.
He should have known that “well” never lasts.
Or: Old Noco does something reckless. Neither Monoco nor Verso take it too well.

Summary
“Mark me,” Verso demanded against Gustave’s mouth. “I want to feel it tomorrow.”
Gustave’s eyes flashed. Then his mouth was on Verso’s throat, teeth scraping, biting, and the sharp pain made Verso gasp.
Gustave’s nails raked down Verso’s back, scratching hard enough to draw blood. Marking him, like he wanted . Claiming him.
And Verso loved the violence. Loved the proof that this was real, that Gustave wanted him enough to leave marks. The Fracture Zone is where people are sent to die.
Painters and Writers, enemies for five hundred years, embark on expeditions to reach the Monolith. None survive—until Expedition 33.
Gustave Virlogeux has lost almost everything, and his grief has turned to rage.
Verso Dessendre is already dead inside. The perfect weapon, buried so deep under control he can't remember what feeling looks like.
They've been circling each other for years: enemies on the battlefield, strangers in the dark.
Until one desperate choice binds them in forbidden magic, and suddenly they can't hide anymore.
They'll learn that some connections are stronger than hatred, and that some enemies were never meant to be enemies at all.Bookmarked by Kaniner

Summary
Long ago, the city now known as Old Lumière prospered, watched over by a benevolent sorceress known as The Paintress. Then came the drought. And the famine. And the people began to blame their sorceress for their misfortune. They set fire to her mansion, killing her only son. Unable to heal him, the sorceress did the only thing she could to save him - she cast a curse. From that moment on, he became a terrible creature, the outward manifestation of the worst parts of himself. The city fell, overrun with cursed monsters. And a clock began ticking down. If, within a century, the creature that had once been Verso could find his soulmate, he would be returned to life. But if a hundred years pass without a soulmate being found the curse would take every last descendent of Old Lumière.
—
“Surely you know about soulmates,” Monoco says, disapproval clear in his voice.
And Gustave does know about soulmates. The thing about soulmates is that they are incredibly rare. Because not only did both souls have to be compatible, both had to be willing, too. They had to choose each other. No coercion, no ulterior motives, just… choice. And who would ever choose to love a monster?Bookmarked by Kaniner

Summary
“Wait! Verso, damn it, wait, what-”
Fingers close around his wrist. He freezes, paralyzed; his arms are held down again, stripping him of the ability to defend himself, and a familiar-unfamiliar voice is ringing in his ears, and he is tugged and turned around, and soon the bruises on his wrists are going to be the least of his problems, because… because…
“Verso. Verso, look at me. Hey, look at me.”
Or: Maelle brings back a certain someone from Verso's past. Things do not go well, and Verso ends up on the doorstep of the only person in Lumière who makes him feel safe.
(It's a shame things between them are not that simple.)Bookmarked by Kaniner
