It's the tone she might use to address her own. Crossing her arms over her chest, shaking her head, a furrow coming to her meticulously plucked brow. “Have you considered a surrogate?”

    “What?” The short, sharp word is out before she realises that she has spoken. Byleth forces her jaw to halt and seize to stop her teeth from grinding.

    Dimitri is waiting for his suitcase to appear on the luggage carousel when it happens. He’s just gotten off a twelve-hour redeye flight without sleeping a wink when a voice says from behind him, faint amidst the airport bustle, “Oh, it’s you.”

    Dimitri turns, jolted to sudden alertness because he recognises the cadence of her voice immediately despite the years. “Miss Byleth?” Byleth gives him a familiar wry smile, which still makes Dimitri’s stomach flip flop. “What a surprise to see you here,” he continues.

    "It's been a long time, Dimitri," she says warmly. Seven years, Dimitri thinks, since they last saw each other, halfway across the world under an entirely different set of circumstances. Seven years since they last spoke, a stilted and awkward goodbye and the lie of let’s stay in touch. Seven years since they were something to one another.

    Where Dimitri and Byleth are ex-lovers, but a chance encounter gives them the opportunity to reconnect.
