Summary
Curses are a fact of life in Bohemia, though in these times of war and upheaval Blessings seem pretty thin on the ground. Yet one of the nobility's best kept secrets is their own curse: children born out of wedlock and unclaimed by their noble parent come out... deformed. Inhuman. Barely more than disfigured beasts. Summary
The first time Henry sees the horse, he nearly misses it in the rain. It’s after the attack on Pribyslavitz. Rail thin, and probably once white. Sniffing around the corpses, looking for grass that has long since been trampled into a muddy pit by the fighting.
“The horse over there. We should take it in. It won't make it like this.”
"What horse?” Henry looks down at the soldier in confusion. When he looks up again, the horse is gone.
Henry wasn't born like this, but he was cursed early enough that it doesn't really matter. Life as a centaur is complicated. Even more so when your whole world is razed to the ground and Death dogs your step. What does it mean to be both horse and man but also neither in a world that is only getting more complicated? Henry sighed. “Don’t worry, Hans. I won’t tell anyone you’re my soulmate. I’d rather forget it myself.”
Hans crossed his arms. “Aye, well.”
Henry huffed. Had he really nothing more to say? Henry only realized he was brushing his thumb over his own soulmark on his left wrist when he noticed Hans staring at the movement. Henry stopped instantly, hiding the wrist with the symbol behind his back.
“And after the championship you’ll leave, yes?” Hans said after a moment.
“With a stellar recommendation from you,” Henry stated as a fact.
Maybe Henry imagined it, but the corners of Hans’s mouth twitched ever so slightly. “Of course.”

Summary

Henry is a blacksmith's son turned thief and assassin after the events in Skalitz.
While attempting to get Radzig's sword back, the two meet and come to an agreement. Henry will help Hans break his curse and, in return, Hans will do everything in his power to help Henry get the sword back.
