Over a year after defeating Nero, being a hero of the Federation hasn't worked out like Kirk expected. So far the Enterprise's five year mission has been little more than a posture to prevent others from learning how damaged the Federation has become. When the Enterprise is ordered on a real mission to locate a survey ship which vanished near the storm-wracked planet of Darrien 224, Kirk seizes the opportunity to prove his worth and buy his freedom. He just has to survive a new enemy with a familiar face. A different Captain Pike would've told him, on such a world as Darrien 224, passions kill.
