Eddie shakes his head, letting go of the glass and reaching out to tuck the edges of the blanket in around Buck’s hips. Something for him to do. If his hands are busy he doesn’t have to think about how he failed him. He’s here. They both are. That’s what matters.
“You don’t need to thank me,” he says, quietly. “Not for this. Never for this.”

“Well,” Ravi says, taking a step back from the vic with his hands on his hips. The woman blinks up at him balefully, arm still stuck in the boot on her car tire where she’d tried doing… something to get it off. Ravi grins at her, and then at Buck, and oh no. “Lucky for you, ma’am, we have a professional boot remover right here with us today. Eddie, care to offer any advice?”
Eddie’s head whips up from where he’d been rummaging through the med kit. His brow is furrowed in confusion, giving Buck a desperate three seconds before he processes Ravi’s words. It’s hardly his fault, right? It’s not like it was a secret, and he didn’t expect Ravi to trot it out like a funny and totally not illegal anecdote. Also, he was drunk. Also, at that point he’d kinda been forcing himself to accept the fact that Eddie might never come back to LA. Much less be singled out in front of their coworkers like this. So, surely he’s absolved of all responsibility in sharing this story, even if Eddie, post-three seconds of brain buffering, is glaring a hole in the side of Buck’s head right now.

Summary
Which brings Eddie to his current predicament: drowning in love and unable to do a thing about it, all while being subjected to his criminally attractive best friend sauntering around sans a shirt at every hour of the goddamn day.
Morning toothbrushing? Shirtless. After school video games? Shirtless. Reading on the couch? Shirtless. Weeding the garden in LA summer sunshine? Shirtless and sweaty. Asleep half a foot of bedspace away from Eddie? There aren’t even pants involved. Existing day-to-day seems to have become a topless event where Buck is concerned, because Eddie has apparently racked up enough overdue penance for several lifetimes.

Summary
Mi media naranja. Half an orange, right? Like—two sides of the same coin, or something. A complementary coupla guys. A little silly, maybe, referring to a grown adult as a piece of fruit, but the sentiment is sweet enough.
“Hey,” Buck asks the girl beside him. “Um, Alba. She called Rosie ‘mi media naranja’. Like—half an orange? Is that a common saying in Mexico?”
“Oh, sure,” she nods. “It’s a pretty normal term of endearment. Cheesy as hell, but, well.” She gestures at where Eddie and the two women are sitting. Alba’s holding Rosie’s hand now. “When you’ve known each other that long and fit together that well… it’s just sweet.”
My most best friend. That’s what Alba said. That’s—well, that’s who Eddie is to him, essentially. And if what Eddie’s missing is a little affection in a language that feels like home, well. Buck can give that to him.
or, buck notices the lack of spanish terms of endearment in eddie’s life since his abuela died. so, he’s armed with what he’s been reliably informed is a totally normal thing to call your buddy.
