Summary
It’s May 12, 1985, and 14-year-olds Will Byers and Mike Wheeler are spending the afternoon in the Byers’ kitchen—scrapbooking, sipping milkshakes, and arguing about movies like it’s an Olympic sport. There was something on both their minds, as it turned out. So when Will brought up the topic of the party and their family, Mike agreed completely with his fear.
They’re going to keep their relationship a secret so they can work things out themselves, and because they can’t afford for their relationship to get out. Not now, not while they’re only thirteen and living with their parents. No one will know, not until they’re older and can handle the problems that come with having a relationship like theirs.
