Will is terrified.
“What’s happening right now?” he asks. His voice sounds so small to his ears.
“I’m trying to keep you warm,” Mike answers, “and be less scared. I’m trying to be as brave as you.”
“I’m not brave,” Will huffs, head shaking before the three words are even fully out.
“You’re the bravest person I know. The best person I know,” Mike whispers, lifting a hand to touch Will’s cheek, “and the strongest. And the kindest. And the smartest.”
“That’s just a blatant lie,” Will whispers back, “we both know Dustin.”
Mike laughs, exasperated in the way he exhales it through his parted lips. “Shut up, let me finish. Talking is hard.”

There was something on both their minds, as it turned out. So when Will brought up the topic of the party and their family, Mike agreed completely with his fear.
They’re going to keep their relationship a secret so they can work things out themselves, and because they can’t afford for their relationship to get out. Not now, not while they’re only thirteen and living with their parents. No one will know, not until they’re older and can handle the problems that come with having a relationship like theirs.
No one is going to find out.
