Summary
Losing a Stirling was a pain unlike anything Francesca could have ever fathomed. And she’d already lost two. John, she’d lost to fate. Michaela, she’d lost to —
Well. She still did not know why.
But the twin losses struck her and left her with wounds that would not heal.
To think there was a Stirling in need of a home. In need of love.
And Francesca had nothing but love to give a Stirling.

Summary
“This is Lila,” Michaela introduced her.
“Hm,” Francesca nodded. Francesca had the sudden urge to rip Michaela’s hand from Lila’s hair.
Michaela looked at her curiously. “Do you want to join us?” she offered hesitantly.
Francesca’s mind went blank. Social convention went out the window.
“No,” she said, and went into her room, shut her door, and threw herself on to her bed.

Summary
“Do not come.” Michaela tells her once again, her voice attractively low and hard, leaving no room for argument.
“I-” She feels her blush take over, spreading further, down her chest and to her ears. “What if I do?” She tries to challenge, though it gets lost somewhat in the slight breathiness of her tone, Michaela’s gentle kisses moving from the inside of one knee to the other.
“Then you will ruin my plans for you the rest of the night and we will not be able to do them. You do not want that do you?” Francesca shakes her head, her breathing becoming a fraction more erratic as she feels Michaela’s breath travel hotly against the inside of her thigh. “Then be a good girl and do not come.”

Summary
If one did not watch Michaela closely, nothing would have seemed amiss. She smiled, as always, mirthful, as always; but Francesca was watching closely, and she saw that smile freeze, for just half a second, and then suddenly, like a jam jar coming loose after half an hour’s effort, Francesca understood.
“An innate indifference,” she said, “to men.”
