“That’s it. Let me hear you, Sugar,” Severen whispered feather-light into his ear before he skimmed his teeth across his neck and anchored his hand at his throat. Caleb felt like he was losing himself into this, sinking slowly into the dark. He scanned the other man’s face and Severen saw a scared rabbit in his eyes for a split second before his gaze softened and Caleb reached his own hands up to pull his hands harder against his throat.

Severen cocked a grin like a gun. “Why? Two-hundred pounds of Oklahoma beef can’t dig a hole?”
Caleb gritted his teeth so hard it ached. “Wonderin’ why you bothered to come out here at all if you’re just gonna sit there and stare.” Then, with a rush of bravery that would have made his military grandfather proud: “Take a picture, it’ll last longer.”
Severen leaned back on his hands, parted his knees just enough for Caleb to notice, and said, “Princess, you got no idea how much I’d like a picture of you right now.”

It was Diamondback who spoke, her voice a low, dangerous growl. "What the hell happened here!?"
Jesse slowly, carefully, withdrew his wrist from Severen’s mouth. The punctures were already closing. He stood up, wiping his bloodied wrist casually on his jeans. He looked at Diamondback, at Homer’s worried face, at Mae cradling Caleb.
A dark, sarcastic smile twisted Jesse’s lips. It didn’t reach his eyes.
"Lesson went a little too well," Jesse drawled, his voice dripping with irony. He gestured toward the cot. "Professor Severen here decided the best way to teach the boy to swim was to throw him in the deep end. Held himself out as the bait."

“I’ve… I’ve never done this before,” Caleb breathed out, the words a confession aimed at the rain-streaked passenger window.
Not in the truck, not with a man, not with a complete stranger.
He wasn’t talking about the mechanics of it. He was talking about this—the raw, animalistic hunger, the loss of control, the sheer audacity of a stranger in his lap, grinding against him in the front seat of his truck during a storm. A frantic, shame-filled thought clawed its way up: he didn’t want to be seen as some kind of pervert, some deviant who picked up hitchhikers for this.
