Scaramouche feels a pang hit his chest, a deep ache settle into his bones. He does not reply.
“’Mouche,” Tartaglia says, his voice shaking. “Tell me, and I’ll just shut up right now.”
Scara blinks. He opens his mouth to speak, and finds he has no words. His eyes begin to burn.
Tartaglia is silent for a moment. He seems to be thinking about what he’s going to say. Scara knows him well enough to see him weighing pros and cons, worrying at it, biting his lip as he thinks.
“Scara, I . . .” He sighs.
“What?” Scara snaps.

Summary
As the children fathered by an outsider, Aether and Lumine are used to being treated differently than all the other kids in the village they grew up in. When the time comes for them to choose a sacrifice for each of the guardian 'demons' who watch over the land, sending the two of them off seems like a simple choice to the villagers. Aether isn't too thrilled about being thrown away by the people who were supposed to be like a family to him but when he meets the 'demon' he was sacrificed to, he comes to learn that the humans he grew up with were the least human of all.
