It’s 2009 in rural North Georgia and Jayce Talis is running from something. He is running into the mountains, the prodigal son fleeing home in exile. There’s something screaming in the woods and something else whispering underneath his father’s house. He’s going home, God help him, he’s going home. And Viktor, his once best friend now a near stranger, works his grandmother’s farm and follows the old folk magic ways, and when he dreams of sinking into the black mud of his own grave, he sometimes wakes on misty mornings with his face pressed, cold and numb, into the tilled soil.
There’s something ancient and alive unearthed in the furrowed fields of Piltover County. There’s a circle drawn in horse’s blood. Foxes surround a lonely gravesite in the mountains. Gunshots echo from the farmhouse in the valley and poppets made from twigs and hair hang in the trees.
