Like even though he said so much awful shit to me, even though he crossed every line I had… I-I still fucking latched onto every criticism, constructive or not, and then when he complimented me it was like I’d get high on it. I chased those short lived moments through all the abuse. I put up with it until I had a reason to leave, the reason, and only when I was gone did I realize I should’ve done it sooner.”

"No one told you to stop." Chef says near his ear, low and gravelly in a way he's never heard from him. He hadn't realized his movement had stopped, wine glass held uselessly in one hand and the sponge in the other.
"Yes, Chef." It wasn't meant to be a yes to this--to everything. He doesn't think the other took it as that, either, but his hands smooth up over the small of his back anyways.
