There’s a type of lonely that’s surrounded by people-forced into tables at lunchrooms, smiles that don’t quite reach eyes, cardigans and t-shirts that took too long to pick out, loud and cruel jokes that try to appease everyone, false confidence hanging by a string.
There’s another type of lonely, one that everyone knows, that’s completely apart from everyone-smoke swirling in the midday air just outside of thick metal doors, eyes that have only been expected to glare and thus have not learned to do anything else, dark jackets with collars that cover necks, knowing exactly what is expected of you and yet not giving them the satisfaction of doing it.

The Murphy’s dining table has certainly seen better days.
It’s chipped in places now, and the wood is dull and faded. There’s red wine stains and scratches, and a pale, milky spot where someone spilled nail polish remover and the varnish never quite recovered.
But it still has potential. It’s a fixer-upper.
And Cynthia wants to be the one to fix it up.
God knows there are plenty of other things in her life that she never had the opportunity to fix.

Summary
For the first time in his life, Evan Hansen sat in the principal’s office. Not for the first time, he was at a loss for what to say, completely hinging his next actions on the actions of the people near him, studying them for some sign but unable to come up with much in the frantic, muddled place his anxious brain had become.
Evan Hansen tells the truth that day -- or at least, the truth as we know it: a fall from a tree that was no accident, a letter stolen from clenched hand at a printer, a family's grief he cannot begin to know. He tells the truth that no one wants to hear rather than a lie everyone would like to believe.
He almost convinces himself that it's the real, complete truth, too.
