Summary
Declan is twenty-six years old. He has been back from the war for eighteen months. He has lost everything: his family, his home, his purpose. He has been wandering from town to town, doing odd jobs, sleeping in doorways. He ends up in Birmingham because he has nowhere else to go. The city is black and broken. The factories are churning out smoke, and the people are desperate. Declan walks through the streets, looking for work. He finds a sign in a window: "Men Wanted. Apply at the Garrison." He walks into the pub and finds a world that is loud, violent, and alive.
