She composes herself.
“I asked you a question, darling,” Jo smirks, bringing a hand up ever higher. She brushes a thumb along Kate’s jaw, feels it twitch slightly as she swallows, hips still pinned down under Jo. Jo runs her thumb across Kate’s lip, down to her chin, until her hand is resting around Kate’s neck. There’s no pressure, Jo doesn’t move her hand, but the message is clear.

Jo’s not cold. She’s in a jumper, and two pairs of socks, and a blanket, and her fingers are wrapped around a steaming mug of tea. She’s not cold, not really, but there’s something missing. It eats away at her inside, and she feels it worse every day, when the darkness comes two minutes earlier than the one before and Kate slips the curtains closed as soon as they walk in from work and Jo can’t remember the last time she saw sunlight, much less sunlight without the wind biting at her cheeks or frost under her feet.

“Dance with me, instead,” Kate whispers, barely audible under the hum of the DJ, and Jo looks at her quizzically, with her brows knitted together. They’ve never really done that before - they’ve danced around their kitchen to ABBA before, Kate in an apron in the evening and Jo in one of her work suits, but they’ve never properly danced. Not like people do at weddings.
“Yeah?” Jo asks, smiling “You want that?”
“Yeah,” Kate nods. “Yeah, I do,”
“Up you get, then,” Jo responds, intertwining Kate’s hand in hers and pulling her up with a kiss, tugging her back in the direction she’s just returned from, only this time the smile across her cheeks doesn’t need to be faked.

“You’re getting lipstick all over me,” she scowls at the red stain on her head.
Jo slips the lipstick out of her bag, applies yet another fresh coat to her pout. “Oh, angel, there’s a lot more of that to come. On the bed, please,”
Kate practically scrambles to her feet and props herself down on the edge of the bed, in an almost identical spot to where she’d been when Jo had left that very first mark all those hours ago.
“God, Kate, look at you, waiting for me. So desperate,”
The words make Kate whine, and the noise only forces Jo to look amused. “Adorable,”

“He’ll do it again. And worse. He’s done it before, to other people. This is it, Jo, this is the end,” Kate admits, before stalking out into the late-spring darkness and bidding Jo farewell for now.

“Yeah,” Kate says. She cocks her head to the side. “Sure it wasn’t at the pub?”
The woman laughs, that loud sad laugh, “Bad breakup.”
“I know all about those.”
It spills out. Kate leans on the door frame.
“Why are you in my doorway?” The woman asks, frowning in an adorable sort of way.
Kate jerks her thumb to the ground, “Basement. 4B if you ever need a cup of sugar. Or painkillers for that headache you’re going to have in the morning.”
