Summary
On a nondescript set of stairs of a nondescript walkway of the palace Mei Changsu realizes that he miscalculated. Entering the capital he prepared for the dangers of politics, of intrigues and betrayals and murder plots, but he never prepared for what seeing Jingyan again after all these years would do to him.
He has changed; he's grown and aged, his features sharpened, his hair no longer flowing over his shoulders like it did in their youth, but more than that he hasn't changed at all. His serious face and the unyielding air about him are deeply, achingly familiar and Mei Changsu has missed him so much.[Five times Mei Changsu aches to tell Jingyan who he is and one time he reveals himself.]

Ah Cheng stands and, with his back still turned to Ming Lou, straightens his waistcoat and opens the buttons of his cuffs. “How many?” he asks quietly as he rolls up his shirtsleeves with careful precision.

He allows himself to reach for the tea and take a leisurely sip, humming in approval before leaning back with the cup in his hands, watching Ah Cheng smile in satisfaction as he mirrors the action. Because he can do that, too, now. Just watch his lover with all his affection showing in his eyes, no need to keep up walls of decorum even in their own home.
