Astronauts Alan Virdon and Pete Burke crash-land a thousand years in Earth's future. They quickly discover that their "new" world is ruled by intelligent apes—chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas—and that humans have slid way down the evolutionary ladder. Because they know the truth—that humans were once the dominant species on Earth—the ape government considers them a threat to ape society. After avoiding an assassination attempt, they become fugitives along with Galen, a friendly chimp who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
