An incident when Elizabeth Bennet is fifteen forces her removal to her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner of Gracechurch Street, London. Although Mr Gardiner is a merchant, he (or rather Mrs Gardiner) is not as unconnected as might be expected and Elizabeth finds herself moving among the Ton when Mrs Gardiner's cousin remarries. The Matlock's are welcoming to the young displaced woman who they see as being a perfect match for their reserved, prideful, and very eligible nephew/cousin.
