Summary
It had been going on for as long as he could remember. Ivan would be lying if he said he had ever felt truly “grown up”, always a bit too childish for the thousand-ish years he had existed, but sometimes, it was worse. Something would happen, an especially harsh winter, a snide comment from another nation, or sometimes he would simply overindulge on his beloved vodka, and a strange feeling would overtake him. Despite his size, despite his reputation, Ivan felt small.
He didn’t feel like Russia in these moments; he felt like Ivan, before he became a world power. Ivan, the child who was alone for so long. Ivan, who was tortured relentlessly by General Winter. Ivan, who missed his sisters.
He kept this a secret, of course. What would the other nations think if they knew how weak, how completely and utterly helpless he was in these moments?
Sometimes, though, usually in a drunken haze, Ivan would imagine what it would be like if someone knew. If someone cared. What it would be like if someone could make him feel safe and protected when he was small and vulnerable instead of scared and lonely.

After collapsing on live TV, Alfred F. Jones (the literal embodiment of freedom™) finds himself caged up in the White House basement by none other than his own president, Donald fucking Trump. Forced to eat nothing but cold McDonalds leftovers & off-brand Diet Coke.
Canada breaks into the White House to check up on his brother. Meanwhile, Prussia and Denmark may or may not be plotting the dumbest rescue mission in history… (maybe with some help from Russia…)
As the rest of the world holds their breath, in anticipation, waiting too see what stupid shit the USA is gonna try pull next. -

Alfred turned to look at him then. Really look. Ivan's face was calm, but there was something raw around the edges something Alfred recognized because he saw it in his own mirror too often.
"At least when you wake up tomorrow, the sun will come. There will be flowers eventually. Green things pushing through the earth without asking permission. "Me..." Ivan gestured vaguely at the endless white. "I have winter. Always winter, somewhere in me. And no one to turn to when the nights are longest."
Alfred swallowed. His throat hurt. "You've got the same sky I do.”
Ivan's smile softened, almost real. "Yes. I used to reach for it. Remember? We both did.”
