Summary
Months after the spread of deviancy and the subsequent gifting of rights for androids, Detective Richard “Nines” Stern is tasked with converting one of the few non-deviant androids left in Detroit, a GV200 “Gavin” model. The way it has to be done, however, is for the android to be Nines’ new partner at the DPD. Once Nines gets Gavin to deviate, he won’t have to deal with him anymore. It’s as simple as that.
But deviancy, Nines realizes, is a lot more complicated than it seems.

One year and two months after coming to the DPD, he was shot on a case for the first time. He’d been lucky up until this point. Instinctively, his hand had pressed against the wound as he stumbled to cover, muttering curses under his breath. Still searching for the suspect, he pulled his hand away for a moment to grab his gun, only to look down and freeze at the sight of blue fluid dripping from between his fingers. Instead of red.
Gavin Reed’s brain broke.

Gavin and Nines receive a case about a virus going around killing androids, with next to no information on what it does besides leave multiple androids dead all over the city. Because of Nines' more advanced, highly resilient systems, he's given the task to take the virus into his system quarantine and create an antivirus. Neither of them expect Nines' virus quarantine to fail, though.

Connor knew fear. He’d been deviant for almost ten months at this point, and fear had been one of the first emotions he’d ever experienced and learned to understand. And he knew that in humans, fears could rule the mind sometimes, no matter how irrational. Connor still had a fear of heights after the way his first mission had ended. And Nines apparently had a fear of being repaired, but why?
