"Wh- no," Mike huffs, the tips of his ears turning bright pink, much to El's delight. "No, I think she's- well, I don't know. Just, there's definitely something that she specifically didn't want you to see, so there's a chance it maybe has something to do with you." He widens his eyes meaningfully at her, and El frowns, not understanding.
"You think she has a secret from me?"
"Yeah," Mike says slowly, and again El feels like they're having two separate conversations. "Like, maybe a romantic secret?"
El frowns. "The girl from the diner is not a secret, though," she points out, "I was there."
Mike groans, exasperated. "Not her! I'm saying Max likes you, El."
Living with Max has its ups and downs. Only most of it is El's fault.
