Summary
Gilbert Blythe, Crown Prince of the kingdom of Avonlea, is about to turn twenty-one and assume his position as the High King. But before he can do that, he must marry. And not just marry anyone, but a Caster. A woman born with special abilities, magic given to the people of Avonlea by a star centuries ago, a woman that is able to manipulate the world around her. Someone who can call a hurricane or cause an avalanche with the wave of her hand. Avonlea is a small kingdom that requires protection, so only a Caster Queen will do. For centuries, the Caster Queen is chosen through a competition called the Casting Trials, where eligible young Caster ladies grow their abilities and compete for the hand of the prince.
Anne Shirley-Cuthbert, and orphan from the mainland and now adopted daughter of the Lord and Lady Cuthbert, is invited to participate in the Casting Trials, a time honored tradition on Avonlea. Completely sure that the prince will never choose her, Anne decides to use this as an opportunity to finally learn to handle her Fire Caster gift.
