   Summary

   A year into working on her PhD, the reader is transferred to a small town in upper New York in order to gather materials for her thesis on the restoration and conservation of religious texts.

   Away from her family and friends, surrounded by a judgemental village and haunted by a gruesome past, she must show the faculty her research was worth something, all while being the object of curiosity of a priest with an equally troubled background: Father Jud Duplenticy.
