Olruggio's scruffy, unpretentious allure was sometimes strong enough that, out of a sense of sheer self preservation, Qifrey would give his apologies and make himself scarce for the evening, pretending that he needed to revise his lesson plan for the week, or write to Beldaruit, or even just head to bed early.
“Suit yourself,” Olruggio would say, his uneven grin making it all the worse.

Every so often, even years after Olruggio had accepted Qifrey’s I can’t, that tension between them pulled taut. Olruggio’s eyes were a deep, dark blue, and at night they looked nearly black, even with the lamp casting light onto his face.
“Sometimes,” Olruggio said, “I feel like you’re hiding something.”

Summary
Olruggio knew, long before it all came crashing down, that he’d made a terrible decision. That the consequences would catch up to him, and there’d be no avoiding a series of potentially world-ending conversations.
He just hadn’t expected it to happen quite so spectacularly.
The initial idea, prompted by a suggestion from an older noblewoman who’d commissioned him for something completely different, wasn’t bad at all. He’d been working on a set of singing stones, and the lady had made an offhanded comment about the potential of magic that could make an object resonate. She’d meant it as a joke, but where she saw humor, Olruggio saw potential—and told her as much.
And just like that, he’d had a commission. And a problem.
