Summary
Thirteen-year-old Max Caulfield had a sad secret. The real reason her family moved to Seattle on such short notice wasn’t for a new job or because of some whim from her parents. It was because of her. She had been diagnosed with cancer and needed to be seen by better doctors than she would have access to in Arcadia Bay.
While she fought for her life, her best friend, Chloe Price, was left in the dark. Max didn’t want Chloe to have to deal with another death after just losing her father, so in an effort to protect her, she cut off contact with her.
Seven years later, Max has slowly been losing her will to keep up the fight. But after having a fateful reunion with her former best friend, her outlook on life may begin to change.

She can’t imagine she’s hiding her emotions very well. “Vander’s dead because of me. Powder…Powder’s dead because of me, Mylo and Claggor are dead and—I was supposed to protect her. Ekko thinks she’s angry with him. Powder hears it in his pleading, in his crying, in his sleep from where he’s posted at her door. For his sake, she comes out, sits with him in the big room and stares at different cobwebs. But eventually all the space, all the empty space (because there’s no Vi and no Vander and no Claggor and no Mylo and no Vi and no Vi and no Vi—) makes her sick to her stomach and she sprints back inside the room, locking out her best friend in the world. Her last friend in the world.Vander is gone, Silco's taken Vi and Powder and Ekko are alone. We follow them as the foundations of this world settle into place.
