    Summary

Peeta Mellark was reaped into the Hunger Games expecting the usual things: to be used, to be watched, to bleed for the Capitol’s amusement.

    He was not expecting Trent.

A minister. Of all people. Someone powerful enough to choose him—and gentle enough to ask instead of take.

Peeta thinks he understands what’s happening at first. He thinks it’s about survival, protection, leverage. Things he knows how to trade. Things he knows how to endure.

What he doesn’t understand is care.

Being listened to. Being backed. Being allowed to want without immediately paying for it.

Wanting was never safe in Panem. Wanting got people hurt. Wanting got people killed.

So when Peeta finds himself wanting anyway—wanting to live, wanting to stay, wanting someone who could destroy the world for him—he does the only reasonable thing.

    He panics.

This is a story about survival, choice, and what happens when the sharpest blade in the room is pointed outward instead of at you.
