Taylor Swift had a public relationship with English actress and songwriter Zara Gainsbourg for over four years.
In February 2021, shortly after the release of the American's ninth studio album, evermore, a joint break-up note was published, and since then Zara has kept to working on smaller projects, refusing interviews and avoiding public appearances beyond the strictly necessary. Taylor, on the other hand, began re-recording her albums, embarked on a world tour celebrating her eras, and released two new albums, Midnights and THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT, featuring lyrics that not only refer to her past relationship with the Englishwoman, but also to the brief moments she had with Matty Healy and Travis Kelce after they broke up. A small self-deprecating chuckle comes through the line. It undoes Mira, one knot at a time.
“It wasn't enough.”
The volcano erupts. Fire running through her veins, molten. She can feel the sneer only because the muscles on her cheeks hurt.
“You won. That's what you wanted isn't it? When we were 18 and you made me promise I'd tell you. He touched me… and all I could think of was how it wasn't you.”
