“Get out, get out, get out!” Mike screams, sobbing roughly. His throat feels completely raw, and he covers his ears, desperate to block out the sound of Will’s screams mixed in with One’s distorted, maniacal laughter. “Get out of my head!”

Two years after One's initial defeat, Mike has an encounter with the greatest evil of the Upside Down and learns far more about his plans for Hawkins, for the party, and for Will than he ever expected.

“Do you ever… just… feel like you’re pretending to be someone you’re not?” Mike whispers, daring to open his eyes and look at his mom. “Like… you’re just… trying to be what… everyone else wants you to be instead of… instead of who you really are?”
His mom’s face falls, and the knot in Mike’s stomach twists painfully. But then, a look of understanding forms on her face, and she offers Mike a smile—sad and knowing.
“All the time, Michael,” she admits softly, tears welling in her own eyes. “All the time.”

“No.” The word escapes Mike’s lips, and it’s barely a whisper. Tears blur his vision, and he turns back around to El, trembling. “N-no, that… that can’t be right… Will… he-he can’t be gone, El; he can’t be dead—”
“Oh, Mike,” El whispers. She reaches up, wiping the tears from Mike’s eyes, and there’s a look on her face—so tender and so, so kind. “Isn’t this what you wanted?”
Her words hit like a bucket of ice water being dumped on him, and Mike recoils, staring at his girlfriend—no, wait, his wife—in horror. “W-what? How… how could you say that, El? How could you say that?!”

An encounter with Vecna forces Mike to reconsider just what it is he really wants in his life.
