Summary
As he watched the quiet twitch of Erik’s nostrils, Istvan thought about killing him. It’d be easy; he was defenseless. Erik slept in his armor should their pursuers catch up with them in the night, but his head and neck were exposed. A knife could so easily pierce that fragile skin, spill the blood Istvan could near see pumping just under the surface. It wouldn’t be the first time Istvan had bled a man to death in his sleep nor would it be the last. The knife had always sat right in his palm.
Killing him would be the smart thing to do. No more point of weakness, no more leverage against him. Nothing for Hanush or Radzig or any other pompous idiot to hold over him. No more questions of his true ambition. It’s what Istvan would have done before he met Erik, ruthlessly cutting any fat off his life.
Carefully, he removed his glove one finger at a time and put his hand to Erik’s throat.

Summary
“The only thing we can do now is sit and wait to hear from Odette.”
“I know.” Richie wiped his sweaty palms again. “I know.”
Finishing his beer with a tilt, Jim crushed the can in his hand and stood to toss it. Wondered how Richie’s jeans still had any color for all the stress they were being put through as he turned to address him over the kitchen counter. “Well, given we’re both dead men stuck in our grave of a trailer for the time being, why don’t we find something to take your mind off it for the time being?"
“What did you have in mind? Gin rummy?”
“If that’s what you want,” Jim drawled, smoothing down his shirt as he leaned against the wood column marking the room. “But we’ve got some time to kill, and it has been a while since I’ve seen you.”

Summary
Erik was seven the first time he saw a man die. Or somewhere around that age. He’d never been too good at counting the winters. His mother used to laugh when he’d pause and think about it, try to recall when last he remembered.
It was too young, Erik had thought at the time. He worried he was missing something, worried seeing that death would reveal it.
Too old to hide from it, his father said. Death came for them all one day, and it was better to take it head on. No son of his would cower from it, no matter the age.

Summary
Elishka looked over the graves solemnly. "Death is an ugly thing."
"Yes," he said, "it is."
"How can you handle so much of it?"
"I do what I can to respect it. Make it clean and quick; dignified as I can." The graves were awash with the red of the setting sun. "It is ugly, but it needn't be cruel."
"All death is cruel." Pain was heavy in her voice, and he knew he'd made a misstep. So many in her life were gone, taken away from her without anything she could do. He'd played a part in that as well.
Hermann didn't say anything but reached out his hand, slowly, and took hers from where it wrapped around his arm to hold it firmly in his own. They stood as such, in silence, two figures pressed together in the setting light until Hermann had to walk them down the hilltop from memory.

Summary
“You don’t have to say yes, but I’m happy to do it if you want.”
And it’s not that Jim hadn’t thought about it, of course he had. From the first time Richie had grinned over at him at the town hall meeting, stars in his eyes when Jim had introduced himself, following him all over town before Jim finally confessed to also be investigating Tooley’s death. He hadn’t been cruised that hard in a while, and he’d grown quite fond of Richie in the short time they’d known each other, been surprised by him more than once, and impressed even more.
“Well, I’m not going to say no.”
Richie got to his knees in the carpet.
