There were three things Mary knew about love.
It was something you earned, not something freely given.
It was often louder for others than it ever was for her.
And it was completely unattainable for Mary Bennet.-

Summary
Perhaps Ryder would take her on another hike, a better hike, where it wouldn’t rain and no one would interrupt them. Or better yet, he might propose in view of her mother, that she could never again belittle Miss Bennet, or pass judgements on her, for Ryder was a match that would please any discerning mama. (Tom was not, for he had nothing he had not toiled for.) Perhaps they would have a fleeting engagement, and request special permissions to marry as soon as possible, that they might leave for Italy immediately. Perhaps there she might forget about Tom, and about the conversation on the lake, and on the mountain, while drinking sweet wines and breathing sea air. Perhaps that was for the best.
