Dragons have always claimed their riders.
“It is a myth to believe that we claim our dragons, Luke. We cannot control or sway their hearts. Syrax gifted me her scale that day and this as well,” pulling up her right sleeve, she showed him the healed scar on her forearm, “and we’ve never parted since. It is no simple feat to be claimed,” she cautioned. “Others have died for even attempting to go near one. In some ways, you are lucky to be alive.”
Luke pulled away from his mother's embrace and wondered if falling from a tower was a better fate than the one that had befallen him.
He needed a dragon to his name. That way, no one would whisper about his bastard blood tainting the family tree.

“Jace?” He whispered hopefully, blinking in the low light as a shadowy figure crept towards his bed. The shape was too tall, too willowy to be his brother though, and Luke felt his heart jump and his stomach clench with anxiety.
“Does your brother often visit you in your bed chambers in the middle of the night?” Aemond’s voice was cruel, cutting through his drowsiness and jolting him to full awareness. The bed dipped as his uncle knelt up onto it, looming over Luke, his silver hair gleaming as the pale moonlight through Luke’s window reflected off of it.
