Summary

“Look, this might sound a little strange… but could you hear me out for a moment?” Phainon asks, his tone hopeful.
Mydei supposes he signed himself to it. He gives a short nod. Phainon fidgets with the bandage between his fingers.
“I wanted today to be special.” He pauses, his shoulders dropping slightly. “There’s someone I’ve wanted to ask out for a long time.”
Oh, by Nikador balls. Mydei was really going to have to sit here and listen to Phainon gush about his undying crush on Cyrene, wasn’t he? He clenches his fists inside the costume, a wave of discomfort washing over him.
Mydei is working part-time as a mascot at the recently opened Chimera Park. While wearing his Fig Stew costume, he unexpectedly befriends a cheerful teenager, who happens to be both his classmate and his long-time secret crush for over two years, Phainon.

Phainon’s brave. He’ll be a mighty warrior one day, and if he can’t even make friends with a single underfed child, he’ll never muster up the courage to seek out Castrum Kremnos.
“Hey there!” Phainon smiles cheerfully, dropping down onto the bench beside the boy. “What’s your name? I’m Phainon. Let’s be friends!” He sticks his hand out expectantly.
In a perfect world, the boy would eagerly offer his own name, taking Phainon by the hand, and the two of them, best friends for life, would go happily gallivanting off into the sunset to become legendary warriors.
The boy blinks.
“...Lord Irontomb.” He lunges forwards, faster than Phainon can react, and takes the offered hand into his bony grip. “It’s you.”

“I know,” Phainon whispers, leaning forward, “that you aren’t human.”
Mydei is thoroughly unimpressed. He leans forward, matching Phainon’s volume. Sue him, maybe he’s a bit dramatic too, and says, “And? You aren’t either.”
“What!” Phainon rears back, comically shocked. The audacity of this boy. Did he think Mydei wouldn’t notice? As if Phainon could hide a secret from him in his life. “I thought I was being subtle.”
The idea is so ridiculous that Mydei is tempted to leave the library just so he can laugh forever.
