“So. How did you two start,” Camilla chimed in around the straw of her iced tea, and she said the word so timidly Gideon almost kicked her shin, “dating?”
What followed was likely the longest and most soundless moment Gideon had ever endured. For the first few seconds, she pretended as though the question had never been asked and picked at her sandwich. Then she remembered how social interactions typically worked. Then she waited patiently, because certainly Harrow was composing a well-thought-out response to the harmless inquiry. Then she realized no response was coming, and promptly tried to inhale a piece of cucumber.
“It just happened,” Gideon finally responded after coughing up her lung. Harrow passed her a napkin. She dabbed at her eyes. “We’ve known each other for a while. Then one day, it was like, boom.”
“Yes,” Harrow intoned. “Boom.”
(Or: Harrow and Gideon pretend to date for a scholarship.)
