Jules was choking on her own blood. She could see a Parshendi arrow emerging from her chest. Adolin, still in his Shardplate, was holding her. He was screaming for a healer, but no one could hear him over the sound of Kholin troops being slaughtered.
Jules couldn't die now. She had been about to figure it out: why she was seeing those strange figures, the voice she could hear that others couldn't, the world of glass beads she sometimes saw in her dreams. She struggled to reach the answer she could feel on the edge of her mind. She tried, harder than she’d ever tried at anything before, and suddenly she grasped it.
“Life before death,” Jules managed to choke out in English, blood coming out of her mouth as she said it.
“What?” Adolin asked in Alethi, not understanding her.
“Strength before weakness,” she gasped. Her vision was growing black, but with the last of her strength Jules managed to scream, “Journey before destination!”
