Gokudera felt a surge of furious adrenaline at the memory. “What the hell are you doing here?”
The smile wilted. “Delivering bad news, unfortunately.”
Gokudera frowned.
“Sorry to tell you this… but your old man passed away.”

Summary
AU; prequel to Down the Stairs. How Yamamoto Takeshi, the Mafia world’s most feared assassin, ended up on the wrong side of the wrong side of the law.
“He was unmatched when it came to the sword,” Enrico says, before his voice drops, taking on a bitter quality. “For all the good it did him in the end.”
Yamamoto stops, and lets that sink in. Enrico halts too, watching him carefully.
Because for the first time since finding his dad dead, Yamamoto is experiencing something other than his haze of grief, shock, and loss; all of a sudden, he’s feeling the unjustness of it for the first time. Anger. Suspicion. Because his father’s death, it wasn’t just an accident or coincidence, after all. Someone did this. Someone did this to him.
He has no way of knowing that he’s standing with that very man, and no way of knowing that that man’s words have had exactly their intended effect.

Summary
Yamamoto is dead. Which makes the fact that Gokudera can see, hear, and talk to him rather interesting.
“How did I die?” I ask him finally. I figure that’s at least a place to start.
Gokudera suddenly seems to find the floor interesting. “You were shot.”
Somehow I get the feeling there’s something he’s not telling me.
But before I can ask, his brow creases. “Maybe it wasn’t supposed to happen. Maybe that’s why you’re still here. Maybe I’m supposed to do something to save you.”

Tsuna looks Reborn directly in the eye and, try as he might, can’t keep his voice from cracking on the next few words.
“…Why did it have to be me?”
Reborn’s gaze is not without sympathy, but his response is absolute.

Summary

Gokudera thinks of the Yamamoto Takeshi he knows: the deadliest assassin in Italy, the man who’s been slowly chipping away at the Vongola and their allies for years now. The man who they say strikes like a shadow, killing his enemies before they even know he’s there. The master of Shigure Souen Ryu; the one swordsman Squalo has never been able to defeat.
Gokudera thinks all of these things, and finds once again that no matter what the Tenth says, no matter what person Tsuna may have known all those years ago, in his mind there is no doubt at all as to what kind of person Yamamoto is now.
