Summary
A canon-divergent retelling of From Blood and Ash, with a dark twist.
When Hawke stays in the corridor during Poppy's 'lesson', he realizes that the Maiden is not so unlike he was once - trapped. Abused. Alone. But he knows she has a lightning wit and is extremely bright, and he sees that she has questions about the way the Ascended rule over Solis. He begs her to observe. To question. To think. And he hopes that the brash, clever young woman will come to understand the lies she's been raised to believe.
When Duke Teerman and Lord Mazeen finally cross the line, refusing to hold back their lust (for her body and her blood), the guard takes matters into his own hands. She will not spend another moment in the clutches of the Ascended. He will have to figure out later what that means for his brother, himself, and his homeland.
Now the heir to Atlantia flees in the night, a beaten and broken Maiden in his arms. She will help him find his future. He will help her reclaim her body and repair her soul.
