Shikamaru, half-asleep in the saddle, his dark eyes sunken with a grief he didn’t talk about. Kiba, laughing too loud at nothing in particular. Lee, bouncing in his seat like they were on their way to a festival instead of a two-bit town in the middle of nowhere. And Neji, stoic and alert, scanning the horizon like it might bite.
