Her neck protests as she gazes up at old pine, flesh blackened beneath her hair on the side of her head that sunlight first touched. It's her bridge, she slowly realizes. The one she favored as a child, her favorite place to play. Between the planks she catches a glimpse of fabrics, cinnamon brown and cornflower blue crumpled together in a soft pile, her mother's dress and coat, casting shade. She sees something starker too: the unassuming, stern black of a clergyman's shirt, the alabaster of a Roman collar.
