Summary
The Ryland Grace expelled from Earth was known for what he didn’t have; what he wasn’t. A coward forever seen as a hero, because he left.
The Ryland Grace who will return to Earth — forever cast in xenonite, forever cast in the role of a hero — will be known the same way he knew Yáo and Ilyukhina, before he remembered them. Captured in one single moment in time, by someone who loves him. Forever seen through Rocky’s perspective, because he turned back.
A hero embarks on a journey and returns forever changed. Ryland Grace doesn’t fit that mold, isn’t a hero. Might not return. Might not want to.
But Rocky thinks he’s brave.

Summary
Rocky talks about his family all the time.
But Grace has no one. No family, plenty of acquaintances, but no friends. He remembers not having to tell anyone but his school that he was disappearing to a boat in the middle of the ocean, never took a slot on the phone he knew was in action somewhere on the ship. He never even looked for it.
It’s just that he’s always been a little weird and a little hard to love.

“No understand word, Rock.” Their relationship? What about their relationship? His heart skips. Their occasional language barrier is like getting a patch of static right at the good part of the show you’re invested in.
Rocky hesitates to speak for a moment. “New word: suspected mates.”
Grace’s world tilts on its axis. There’s just no way that’s right. He reaches up and drags his beanie off of his head. Only then did it feel right to implore, “…Your people think you and I are mates?”
Or
Ryland Grace spends years in space falling in love with his best friend and keeping it secret, convinced Rocky could not possibly feel the same. Rocky, always on the same page, is conducting identical research.
It’s why they’re such a great team.

“What made you come up with this?” Grace asks. His voice is thick.
“Grace need comfort,” Rocky says matter-of-factly. “Like a hug. This comfort Grace, question?”
Grace presses his hand more firmly against the top of Rocky’s carapace, and Rocky shifts a bit within the xenonite, rising so that they make nearly direct contact through the panel. It’s not like they haven’t done something like this before—Rocky is always pressing his claws up against Grace’s palm—but it’s different for Grace’s whole hand to be so close, to feel the heat of a living thing against his side and against his palm all at once.
“Yeah,” Grace breathes.
