Summary
Here is what Bruce wants to say, when he realizes his son is alive and his son hates him: I remember who you were when I met you. I remember what you looked like. I remember the way your voice cracked. I remember the way you acted so brave, even when you were terrified, and I remember looking at you with a tire iron still in your hands and a bruise under your eye and knowing I’d never rest until I knew you were safe.
Here’s what Bruce wants to say: I haven’t rested yet.
OR
Bruce has always known enough about Jason to know that there are many things he doesn’t know about Jason. And, at twenty three, Jason decides to tell him those parts, too.
OR
Bruce remembers his son Jason at various points in his life.

Summary
“I know that you’re mad at me because I tried to make you and Dick act like functional human beings,” Tim says one day, “but dude, I was in your safe house the other day—and yes, oh my god, I was in your safe house, how dare I? Well, Jason, what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine—and I have to ask: do you think you have enough beans?”
Jason freezes, and he clenches all of his muscles. “What?” He grinds out through gritted teeth.
“Like, yes, I understand the point of a safe house is that you can live there indefinitely, if needed, but god, man, at the point that you’re eating black beans every day for five years, you got to ask yourself: is it worth it? I just feel like at the point where you’re having to store canned beans in a closet because you ran out of room in the cabinets, that’s when you know you’ve gone a bit too far.”
OR
Jason has carried some food habits with him from childhood, but, just like everything else, Tim seems intent on trying to fix it.
OR
Tim and Jason’s abandonment issues are destined to have a cage fight eventually. Black beans give them the excuse they need.

Summary
“So why do you only pick fucked up kids?” Jason asks, charging into Bruce’s office.
Bruce looks up at him, clearly exhausted. “Well,” he says deadpan, “I thought about only adopting well adjusted kids, but they were all reluctant to wear tights and become nocturnal, so I went with Option B.”
OR
Jason never told Dick and Bruce everything. But they still understand him better than Stephanie or Tim ever can.
OR
Dick is just a soccer mom at this point, trying to get all of his kids talk to each other.

Summary
On the fourth day, it becomes clear that Joe is organizing something—more muscle than usual, a few more Black Mask affiliates than there should be. The few glimpses of Joe that Dick gets, he’s on his phone, speaking rapidly and gesturing emphatically.
On the fifth day, everything is quiet. No one comes, no one goes.
On the sixth day, Tim calls Dick: they’re not sure where Jason is. And yeah, maybe that’s just normal, and they’re not panicking yet. But they’re not sure where he is. And they’re about to start looking.
And on the seventh day, Bruce shows up at his door with Jason standing next to him, pale and hacking out a cough, putting too much weight on Bruce’s shoulder, and says: “I need to ask you a favor.”
OR
Dick is supposed to be on a boring stakeout assignment. Jason complicates that.
OR
“I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU.” “IT’S ROTTEN WORK.” “NOT TO ME. NOT IF IT’S YOU.”
