In this universe, a mark blooms for the person you're fated, if you're fated to meet at all. With such a vast cosmos, less than 10% of the recorded population has a soulmark - most are encounters that never fully bloom, faces going past the billions among planets, star systems, whole galaxies.
A mark only appears once fate's already decided two people are going to meet - soulmates, guaranteed, long before they actually cross paths. From there, each of them carries whatever the other feels most intensely, with nothing else to go on.
Ratio's had his mark for years, and by now can nearly set his watch by how often it goes off. Aventurine's had his for just as long, and has never let himself wonder for more than a few seconds who might be stuck with him.
