“Are you a little?”
Max's expression doesn't change when Daniel blurts the words at him.
He answers, “Yeah.”
Then he shrugs.
Like Daniel’s entire world doesn’t tilt on its axis with the movement. Like this information was obvious, or innocuous, and shouldn’t completely blow Daniel’s mind the way it does.
“What the fuck? Since when.”
“Since I was sixteen, obviously, Daniel.”
“I would’ve noticed,” he weakly argues. “There is no way I wouldn’t have noticed.”
Save for last week, never had Daniel’s caregiver instinct ever been set off by or around Max. There is just no way Max could’ve regressed around him. He would’ve noticed.
Daniel can’t be a failure at this, too.
“No one notices,” Max replies, “which is good. I am quiet when I regress.”
“What do you mean, quiet?”
“As in, I do not speak, Daniel.”

Summary
Max really wants to be okay with putting space between him and Lando.
He's tried so hard, for so long.
But nothing has changed. He still feels an all encompassing sense of anxiety whenever he's apart from Lando. Max has learnt to coexist with it, and to ignore it the best he can.
But it's building, it's always been building.
or; Max gets himself to the point of the return. His family have to teach themselves how to help him.
