Summary
Without understanding how, Akaza found himself facing the most unexpected outcome: Kyojuro had survived their battle. But Kyojuro was human, and humans… are fragile. Perhaps Kyojuro would never regain his strength, but even the strongest human needed time to recover, and Akaza decided to bet on that, letting Kyojuro live in the hopes of finally convincing him to become a demon and fight together for eternity.
On the other hand, Kyojuro believed it was his end, but the rabbit hole went even deeper. After waking from months in a coma, his physical condition was no longer the same, and he knew better than anyone that he might never again have the strength to properly fulfill his duty. As if adapting to all those changes weren’t enough, he now found himself haunted by Akaza’s constant presence.
What neither of them foresaw was that having the other in their life would become a path of no return. -

"The best thing about possessing a finite life is the infinite emotion present in every moment, knowing that you have to cherish it before your short time on this earth ends." Rengoku clutched Akaza's hand tenderly; even a simple action like this possessed such a profound sensation of sadness, Akaza thought ruefully, as if he knew that this bond of theirs could only end in tragedy.
"Eternity is the only way I can have you." Akaza choked out.
"You have me now."
"But not for eternity."

Akaza stopped short, realizing far too late what had slipped out. “I-” he grimaced, irritation flashing across his face before being replaced by something closer to embarrassment. “I mean, you were healing. Humans heal. Slowly. But still. For sure.”
Rengoku straightened as much as he could manage, breathing shallowly until the worst passed. He looked at Akaza with growing bewilderment. “You are… Disappointed,” he observed, voice cautious, “That I am injured?”
Akaza threw his hands up. “I’m annoyed! There’s a difference!”
“…Is there.”
“Yes!”
