When he had told Alhaitham in the study last night that he hadn’t experienced any out of the ordinary dreams since the terminal's shutdown, it hadn’t been a lie. He simply hadn’t expected to eat his own words so soon after.
(And he absolutely had not predicted that the very same night he would be plagued by detailed figments of his imagination that he swore still lingered on his skin like a specter.)
So what if he had dreamt of having sex with his roommate? Certainly it would be a one time anomaly.
Or, Kaveh has explicit dreams about Alhaitham and struggles with the startling (not so new) revelation that sometimes, you don't choose the person you fall in love with. It just happens.

“A distraction,” Zhongli repeats, the words syrupy like honey on his lips.
Venti glances back at him, catches the way the embers this time illuminate something different in the inlaid amber. “Yeah. Have any ideas?”
or, in other words, after thousands of years, venti and zhongli try being friends with benefits. it blows up in venti's face, as things usually do. but not after many, many nights spent together and causing mild distress to everyone that knows them.

Summary
It’s hard to count months when you live for centuries. It’s hard to remember days of the week when you pour bottles of wine down your throat, merrily sing shanties and ballads, and otherwise ignore the shackles of society. Freedom had always been opposed to the handcuffs of genetics.
So, yes, he messed up.
When he had first assumed this body, it had been the first and last heat he had ever gone through. Feverish, sweating, alone and without an outlet. In hindsight, it was for the best, not to dazedly fall victim to an alpha. Yet, it had been unbearable. Apart from the physical pain it had brought for a week straight, the looming feeling of dread had taken over a month to shake. A feeling of incompleteness, loneliness. Venti had vowed never to experience it again.
venti accidentally goes into heat and xiao suggests that, despite venti's pride, he seek the aid of an old friend. it goes better than expected.

“Just think of all the Mora…” he whispers to himself, unbuttoning the ends of his sleeves.
Zhongli shows up not long after. Similar to yesterday, he’s dressed stupidly well: nice suit, hair combed back perfectly and eyeliner that slays. Venti admits, only to himself, that he isn’t hard on the eyes and is, relatively, unobtrusive.
Zhongli’s smile is beautiful, though.
“Are you ready to go?” Zhongli asks, voice smooth and slow but gentle.
Why did someone so flawless on paper need to hire someone to be their date?
In which Zhongli needs a fiancé for the holidays and Venti is broke enough to answer that online ad.
