It happens a week after El and Will returned to Hawkins. The Upside Down had been steadily leaking into the real world and the pack had been strategising about how best to deal with Vecna. But then out of nowhere the Upside Down started to recede, pulling back through the gates, gates that started to seal themselves and the rotten stench that accompanied them started to fade too. El said it wasn’t her, that even though she was stronger now she couldn’t do that, couldn’t shut them all at once and that the gates must be closing themselves.
