Summary
"See? I just knew it," Hans says, poking Henry's chest. "I knew you’d be too damn hairy. Look at all this. You're practically a barbarian."
Henry's snort is fond when it leaves his lungs, more exhale than sound. "You're hairy too," he offers graciously, flicking his eyes down a pale chest. His memory conjures up images of blond tufts—darkened with water, clustered beneath a navel, peeking coyly from under an armpit—before he banishes them. "It's just hard to see on your arms and legs, cause your hair is so fine. It makes your skin look soft," he adds, crazily, airing a thought that should have been kept barred and bolted.
"Do you think about my skin often, blacksmith's boy?"
"No." Henry is distracted; Hans's finger is twisting around his chest hair, an entirely new sensation for Henry's body. His spine tingles. "Maybe. I dunno."
—
Hans keeps insisting that Henry share his bed. A very normal and platonic thing to do.

Summary
“You don’t say please. You don’t.”
“Please,” he says again, and drags out each letter, and Henry should oblige, but his own body is pliant in Hans’s presence, like water, or clay.
Strange, flipped, subverted, this hesitation. Outside of this room, Henry has no hesitation when it comes to Hans. Out there in the world, his golden pourpoint covers the marks Henry leaves on him, hiding these blemishes against his unquestionable authority. Inside, naked, nowhere to hide. Uneasy equals. And one always trying to capitulate to the other.

Summary
“What were you doing at the indulgence chest, Sir Hans?”
“Why, buying my way out of hell, of course.”
“And what perceived wrongs have been weighing on your heart?”
The eyes of God turn to him, he can feel it through the heavens, through the blue sky dotted with flimsy white clouds, through the firmament and down onto him, half a Lord and still a child according to everyone close to him. But how easy. How simple this all is. Nothing this good can be a violation of anything.

Summary
“An interesting hymn,” Henry says. “I enjoyed the imagery. Love as a stream. Love pouring. Like wine perhaps.”
A moment or two before the serving girl comes. A moment to say something. Something real. Hans allows himself to say, “Yes, although I imagine love more as a strike than something to be poured.”
Nearby, a man has suddenly begun to sing, his words slurred from drink. Another man across the tavern has spilled his wine, a puddle of red on the ground at his feet slowly sinking into the wood, becoming just another stain amidst stains. The night has begun to unravel and Henry has brought a book of hymns to the tavern instead of dice or raised fists.

Summary
Hans runs another hand through his hair. Sunlight strikes it once more. Filaments that glow. Strands like a necklace chain worn by a priest during festival days. Like spun gold, like the embroidered thread in Hans’s hood. The tips of his fine bow. The ring on his finger. The shining future that awaits him.
Henry looks away, down at his mud caked shoes.
