Summary
Being a lifeguard was not the plan. It still isn’t, really.
Or at least, it isn’t the long-term plan.
But uni isn’t free, and neither is food or housing, so since she has to be here anyways for school at JNU, she figured that at least she’d get to enjoy the beaches.
Plus, with the advanced training she had from her time as a lifeguard while she (ironically) floundered at UCSD, she’d been eagerly accepted into the fold of Jeju Island’s less experienced team.
So it’s not so bad, Dumb Boy and his ilk aside.
And she does get tons of time to explore the island and its various tide pools, which is great for her morale and her research on the effects of global warming on the species in said tide pools. And sometimes, she gets to help some baby sea turtles get to the water, which feels like actual magic.
So, overall, not a bad gig.
Especially since the two (very pretty, oh my god) girls she noticed seem to have taken notice of her, eyeing her up from under their umbrella, the taller of the two not particularly seeming to care when Zoey sees.
‘Interesting.’Zoey is a hot lifeguard. Mira and Rumi are hot for the lifeguard.

Rumi inhaled, the rush of air filling her lungs, inflating that tiny balloon called hope trapped behind her ribs.
“I love you, Celine.”
The words tumbled out of her gracelessly, but so so sweetly. She waited, and all the while, that little balloon grew and grew, the plastic skin of it stretching and thinning with every second before—
“You too,” Celine said back.
‘Pop.’
“Celine,” Rumi tried again, voice shaking as tears she didn’t even know she still had left to shed began to drip down her left cheek. “Celine, I said I love you.”

Summary
Zoey loves seeing Rumi like this. It’s rare outside their home but not totally unlike the transformation that overtakes her when she’s about to perform—but this is so much more pointed, fixed on five fools instead of fifty thousand beloved fans, and all the more potent for it. When Rumi lifts her chin, a smirk pulling at her lips, it’s like she’s grown three inches and the aura that burns around her is pure power.
(Zoey doesn’t moan. No matter what Mira’s judgemental look might suggest.)
