It all started on a mundane, slow and rather boring work day. With nothing more than one singular, simple yellow sticky note attached to some official request from a hero. Nothing written on it, just a hand drawn smiley with beady eyes gracing the yellow surface in black sharpie.
X stared at it for a long while. It wasn’t uncommon for him to get requests from heroes. After all, he did work at FOMO, and it was literally his job. But the casual smiley face was throwing him off till he looked at who this request was from.
Smile.
Of course the American hero called Smile would leave a note that was nothing but a smiley face. It was just some hero being obnoxious — the American version of friendly.
X had yet to have a single interaction with the man…
Yet he decides to humor the jokester hero. After all… what possible consequence could there be to humoring a single sticky note?

Ordinarily, I would. Whenever I stay overnight at Nick’s, I’m usually the one to see him off to his teaching job. I stand in the doorway with his hoodie and my boxers on, Daisy at my feet and a mug of coffee in my hands, and send him off to his car with a kiss or three, promising to see him when he gets back. Youssef usually meets us at Tara’s Café between nine and nine-thirty for coffee and appointment assigning, and to make sure I do eat, but there are times, like today, where one of us has an early appointment and he has no choice but to tell us to meet early. I hope it’s my turn to have the early appointment. This job is a lot easier if I can get my turn out of the way instead of waiting around like some kind of death omen.
I frown. “I wish but I have to meet someone at eight. I should actually get ready, I don’t want to be late.”

He mouthed it silently. How strange, he thought, that someone would need to declare a name on such a shoddy square of paper. Stranger still that the impatient, cakar ayam scrawl, was undoubtedly his own. If he had written it, then it must be true—that he must be Kahar. A simple and most logical conclusion. However that certainty didn't land as securely as it ought, like a thin cloth stretched tight, unable to cover the perplexing chill prickling in his chest.
He read the letters again and again, as if repetition might summon conversancy, as if the name might suddenly conjure meaning. Instead, it looked increasingly alien, the black ink resisting identity. Kahar. Such a peculiar name. A name that fit him, and simultaneously, did not.
Was he truly Kahar?
